Letter to the Editor: Showing Up for Families When it Matters Most
Parenting has never been easy. But when the world feels scary and uncertain, it can feel especially heavy.
At Cope Family Center, we work with families every day who are deeply impacted by what’s happening in the world right now. Fear and anxiety are very real in our community. Parents are doing their very best to protect their children while navigating constant news, difficult conversations, and experiences that can feel overwhelming.
Something all parents desperately want, no matter where we come from or what we believe, is for our children to grow up in communities where they feel safe.
Yet today, children and families are witnessing violence carried out in this country. They are overhearing conversations, seeing images on screens, and sensing fear and stress in the adults around them. Many children are feeling scared, confused, and unsafe, often without the language to fully express what they are experiencing. It is an unrealistic expectation for children to bear the moral dilemmas of a society created by adults. Children deserve to be children.
No matter our political beliefs, we can agree on this: children and families deserve safety, protection, and dignity.
During times like these, parents often ask how best to support their children. Experts remind us that small, intentional actions can make a meaningful difference – limiting exposure to distressing news, reassuring children that they are safe in the present moment, responding to their questions with age-appropriate honesty, naming and validating feelings, and maintaining routines that help children feel grounded and secure.
Most importantly, families need to know they are not alone.
Parenting through uncertainty takes strength, care, and community. At Cope Family Center, and across our network of nonprofit partners in Napa County, we remain committed to supporting families with resources, programs, and safe spaces to talk, connect, and feel seen. When we come together around our shared responsibility to protect children, we help build a healthier, more compassionate community for everyone.
Sincerely,
Jeni Olsen
