At Cope Family Center, our work is rooted in strengthening families so children can grow up in safe, stable, and nurturing environments. Through parenting education, home visiting, and access to essential resources, we help caregivers build the skills and confidence they need to support their children’s healthy development.

In addition to our own advocacy work, Cope leads the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Napa County (CAPC), a coalition of community organizations, public agencies, faith groups, and elected officials working together to prevent child abuse and build a strong and supportive community for children and families.

By connecting families with the resources, support, and guidance they need to get through challenging times, we can prevent or mitigate the effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), the potentially traumatic events that occur during childhood. These experiences include abuse, neglect, exposure to violence, or growing up in a household affected by substance use, mental health challenges, or instability. ACEs can disrupt a child’s sense of safety and security, and over time, may impact their physical health, emotional well-being, and ability to form healthy relationships. Research has shown that the more ACEs a child experiences, the greater their risk for challenges later in life.

But ACEs are not destiny. Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) can help buffer the effects of adversity and build resilience. These include having a trusted adult to talk to, feeling safe and supported at home, developing strong friendships, and having opportunities to learn, grow, and feel a sense of belonging. PCEs foster healthy brain development, strengthen relationships, and equip children with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges. Even in the face of adversity, positive experiences can help children heal and thrive.
